Today, was a day to remember!
Jan Brett, Author & Illustrator spent the day at McGovern School. The day started out with a book signing. Next, it was off to grade assemblies. The preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade classes each assembled in the school cafeteria to listen to Mrs. Brett as she explained the inspiration behind her books, setting selection and shared tips on drawing. She explained that she feels very lucky to be able to travel the world with her husband, who is in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This gives her the opportunity to see a lot of different things and inspiration to write her books.
Her newest book, the Snowy Nap, was inspired from an experience she had while staying at her home in the Berkshires. While working in her home office, she witnessed a bear peering in the window at her pet rabbit. This encounter evolved into a book about the curiosity animals have for each other. The Snowy Nap, is a fictional story about the adventures of a hedgehog and a winter adventure he didn’t want to miss!
The assembly concluded with a few pointers on drawing. She explained that when she draws, it takes an hour to draw and inch. She offered a hint…..always draw a pencil sketch first, that way you have a map. Please take a look at the graphic above to see the finished drawing.
“Kids can draw something and it can be unique to them. I look at their drawing and I think, why didn’t I think of that!” – Jan Brett
Thank you to Jan Brett for making the small class experience in the Library so fabulous. It was an intimate setting where she answered the students questions. She was so sweet with them!
