Medway’s Burke-Memorial Elementary School Holds Annual Heritage Day Celebration
MEDWAY – Burke-Memorial Elementary School Principal Amanda Luizzi is pleased to share that second grade students recently participated in their annual Heritage Day celebration.
On Thursday and Friday, April 4-5, the second graders were able to share their heritage research projects with their families, followed by a celebration in the cafeteria. The celebration included poems and songs celebrating different heritages. The guests then gathered in “Heritage Hall” (the Burke-Memorial gymnasium) to sample food items from around the world.
“Participating in this celebration each year allows our students to learn about and appreciate their heritage and what helps makes them who they are,” Principal Luizzi said.
As a special addition to this year’s Heritage Day activities, the second grade classes partnered with the Revels organization. Revels, located in Watertown, explores and celebrates the traditions of world cultures through theater and music.
Revels hosted a six-week program with the second grade students. Each class met with Revels actors and musicians to learn about and practice a traditional Mummers play. Mummers plays are seasonal folk plays originally performed by troupes of actors from the British Isles, but later expanded to other parts of the world. Each second grade class performed a Mummers play as part of Heritage Day this year.
The Revels partnership was made possible by a Medway Foundation for Education grant, written by second grade teachers Megan Munger and Marybeth Curran.
